IELTS Speaking Part 1: Introduction

In Part 1 of the Speaking test, the examiner will ask you general questions about yourself and familiar topics such as your home, studies, work, hobbies, or daily life. This part usually lasts 4–5 minutes.

What examiners want to see:
• Fluency and natural speech (not memorized sentences)
• A range of everyday vocabulary
• Clear pronunciation
• Short but complete answers

💡 Tip: Avoid one-word replies. Always add a short reason or example.

Example

  • Question: Do you enjoy reading?

  • Weak answer: Yes.

  • Stronger answer: Yes, I really enjoy reading, especially novels. They help me relax and also improve my vocabulary.

To help you, we provide Band 7 and Band 8 sample answers for each topic.

  • Band 7 = clear and correct, with simple vocabulary.

  • Band 8 = more natural expressions, richer vocabulary, and slightly more detail.

👉 Try answering each question yourself first, then compare with the samples.
